A micrograph of tissue paper under ultraviolet light, causing autofluorescence of the individual fibres. Autofluorescence is the natural emission of light by biological entities such as mitochondria and lysosomes. A cell's extracellular matrix may also contribute due to the intrinsic properties of collagen and elastin. The image was captured through a blue filter to block direct illumination.
